Commissioning an Artwork

Some things to consider

While the idea of commissioning an artwork can be a bit daunting, it allows for flexibility and the opportunity to tie a space together.

A recent commission I worked on was a great example of the steps in the process to make sure that the end product is something that works with the other elements in the room.

Position

Where would you like to hang it? And how big is that space?

Size and scale

How big should the artwork be in relation to other furniture in the space? Is it sitting on top of a sideboard, for example? If so, it should sit just shy of the width of the sideboard giving it space to breathe on either side.

Colour

What other colours are in the room? Could you pick up these colours? Or just one as an accent? This will help bring the space together cohesively.

Texture, Mood & Medium

What other textures are in the room? This can help you decide the sort of mood and medium you might want to choose for the piece.

Inspiration

Are there particular artworks or artists that you love? What is it about them that you love?

What sort of style are they? Abstract, expressionist, impressionist?

Subject

And lastly, is there something special that you want this piece to portray?

Do you have a special place, personal belonging, type of landscape you love, or colours you can't go past?

This is what will really make the piece yours.

What style of artwork would you commission?
